While looking for cheap calendars at Borders this Friday evening, I decided to look at their usually uninspired collection of DVDs. I was pleasantly surprised to find Claude Lelouch's A Man and A Woman, and even happier to find that the DVD, unlike the video, had not been solely dubbed in English. There is an option to listen to a dubbed version, but at least one has a choice.
I quickly added it to my small movie collection, and watched it that night. I'd forgotten how dreamy and romantic the movie is. It's a beautiful, hopeful, and eminently believable tale. Being in love with someone who sends mixed messages and isn't ready to move on is all too familiar. Poignant music, very attractive but real actors- Anouk and Jean-Louis seemed luminous - make it a new favorite.
Looking up details on imdb.com revealed that the little girl, Francoise, grew up to be Salima in the hilarious P'tit Con. Takes me back to happy days of high school French class.
